A Family Game Night Is Fun And Brings Your Family Closer Together

A family game night has numerous benefits. It is not only fun but gets your family involved together and makes for great quality time as a family.

I love family game nights as do my wife and children. Many families have 2 working parents and spending time together as a family is not as easy as it was 30 years ago. A family game night is not a new idea but if you try it out I feel you will be pleasantly surprised at how much fun you can have as a family. I feel it brings a closer bond with my children and wife and so I plan on continuing this practice and making the time to do so. We try to do this weekly and it's not limited to just board games. In the next paragraph I will describe how we choose what we will do as a family.

All photos pictured here are my own.

I'm not good at Guitar Hero but have fun trying to play the various games. We own a few different Guitar Hero games.

How we choose a game

We have a hat with 3 options written on pieces of paper consisting of board games, movies and video games. We rotate weekly on the drawing and whatever is drawn out of the hat is our category of game. Then we all put in a personal choice of what was selected as our category and another drawing is done. That choice is what will we will do. I don't want to confuse you here but I will share an example. I draw out of a hat a piece of paper and it states video games. We all put in writing, or write it for our youngest son who is 6, what video game we would like to play. We draw again out of the hat and I pull out Mario Party 9. So we are going to play Mario Party 9. This works well and offers a variety of options from each week to the next.

Ideas for games

There are so many different options for games but I will list a few to give you some inspiration. Our board games consist of Monopoly, SORRY!, Chutes and Ladders and Candyland. We also include Checkers, Yahtzee, Skip-Bo and Uno in the board game category. Usually our youngest son wants to team up with his mom but we are playing as a family and that is what counts. We use movies as a category and go all out with the popcorn and little box of candy. Suggestions for movies are harder to recommend but they include movies like Transformers, Ice Age, Happy Feet and dozens of other choices that we have. We use the Nintendo Wii for our video game category though we have other systems as well. Most of the games are up to 4 players but if they are only 2 players, we take our turns. We have a blast with various games like Guitar Hero, Just Dance, Mario Kart and Mario Party 8 and 9. We have a several other family oriented games as well but these seem to be the favorites in my family.

Concluding thoughts

Spending time with your family is important. They grow up so fast and you will long for those days of fun and bonding during a family game night years in the future. It only takes a couple of hours a week to do this and though my family is busy we make the time. As I stated earlier that this idea is not new and has been around for many years so there has to be something to this. If you do a family game night all ready you know what I am talking about and if you don't, try it please and come back here and leave a comment in the guestbook. Thank you for taking the time to read what is important to me.
